Peanuts

Although its name implies it is a nut, peanuts are not true nuts but a member of a family of legumes related to peas, lentils, chickpeas and other beans. Peanuts start growing as a flower but because of its heavy weight after pollination, it bends towards the ground and eventually goes underground where the peanut matures.

Peanuts, dating back to around 800 B.C., have been found in archaeological sites. It is believed that peanuts played an important role in the diet of the Aztecs and other Native Indians in South America and Mexico.

Australia has a significant peanut industry, however with limited rain over the past few years, production has been severely effected with limited stock of certain varieties.

Whilst a high proportion of peanuts consumed are imported from China due to cost, with 12 month shelf life on the Australian Hiolec peanut, it is far superior to the Chinese peanut with only 3 months shelf life in bulk.

We only use Australian Hiolec peanuts in our branded retail packs, however both are types of peanuts are available in bulk on request.
