Pecan Nuts
The name pecan comes from the Algonquian Native American word paccan, which means "hard-shelled nut". Today, they are bred for thinner shells that are easier to crack.
Important as the Pecan was in the diet of the ancient American Indians, space-age nutritionists have also recognised its unique properties. In the early 1970s Pecan nuts were the only natural fresh food included by N.A.S.A. in the astronauts diet during the Apollo missions thirteen and fourteen.
Pecans were all but unknown in the Australian marketplace before the 1980s, but have gradually grown in popularity as they have achieved greater prominence. Their excellent 'meaty' taste, firm but yielding texture and supreme versatility make them an easy choice for snacking, baking or savoury cooking.
Pecans are grown in Australia and are the best known of the confectionery nuts. Traditionally used in ice-cream, cake and pies because of the mild sweet flavour, pecans make an excellent dessert ingredient. Pecans are the treat of the nut range for the nut connoisseur.
